The Message of the Cross: The Beginning of Wisdom and the Path to Spiritual Insight
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the Power of God."
— 1 Corinthians 1:18
"But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God and the Wisdom of God."
— 1 Corinthians 1:24
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom; all who follow His instructions have good insight."
— Psalm 111:10
As I was reading Psalm 111:10 and reflecting on Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 1, a beautiful connection began to emerge. If the preaching of the Message of the Cross is the manifestation of the Power of God and the Wisdom of God, could it be said that the Message of the Cross is the Wisdom of God and the starting point for understanding and following the Lord's instructions?
I believe the answer is yes.
When we connect these passages together, we discover a clear spiritual progression that reveals how God brings His children into Wisdom, obedience, and spiritual understanding.
The Cross: God's Ultimate Revelation of Wisdom
Throughout the Old Testament, Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. This fear is not terror but a reverent awe, respect, and recognition of who God is. It is the acknowledgment of His holiness, righteousness, authority, and sovereignty.
However, in the New Testament, Paul reveals something remarkable. God's Wisdom is not merely a concept or principle—it is fully revealed in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
The Message of the Cross is where God's Wisdom is displayed in its fullest form.
At the Cross, God's perfect justice and perfect love met together. His justice demanded that sin be judged. His love provided the sacrifice that would satisfy that judgment.
To the natural mind, a crucified Savior appears foolish and weak. Yet Paul declares that what appears foolish to man is actually the Wisdom of God, and what appears weak is the Power of God.
The Cross is not simply part of God's plan; it is the revelation of God's Wisdom in action.
The Message of the Cross: The Beginning of Wisdom
Psalm 111:10 tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.
What brings a person into genuine reverence for God?
The Message of the Cross.
When we truly see what it cost God to redeem us, pride begins to crumble. We recognize that we could not save ourselves. No amount of goodness, religious activity, self-effort, or human Wisdom could reconcile us to God.
The Cross humbles us.
It confronts us with both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God's love.
In that moment, reverence for God begins to grow. We begin to see Him as He truly is and ourselves as we truly are apart from Christ.
This is the beginning of Wisdom.
The Message of the Cross becomes the doorway through which we enter into a right relationship with God.
Salvation Produces a Desire for God's Instructions
Psalm 111:10 continues by saying:
"All who follow His instructions have good insight."
Once a person has been transformed by the Message of the Cross, something changes within them. Their relationship with God is no longer based upon fear of punishment but upon love, gratitude, and reverence.
The Believer begins to desire what God desires.
God's instructions are found throughout His Word. We do not study Scripture merely to gain knowledge. We study Scripture because we want to know our Heavenly Father's heart and understand how He desires us to live.
The prophet Micah summarized God's desire this way:
"He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"
— Micah 6:8
Likewise, Paul encourages Believers:
"Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..."
— Romans 12:1-2
Obedience is not the means of salvation; it is the evidence of a heart that has been transformed by grace.
Obedience Leads to Spiritual Insight
Many people seek spiritual understanding through intellectual study alone. While studying God's Word is essential, Scripture teaches that spiritual insight is often the fruit of obedience.
Jesus said:
"If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether My teaching comes from God."
— John 7:17
Notice the order.
Not merely hearing.
Not merely studying.
But doing.
The Holy Spirit is the One doing the "doing" in and through us! As Believers walk in obedience to God's Word, the Holy Spirit grants deeper understanding, discernment, and Wisdom. Truth becomes more than information; it becomes revelation applied to daily living.
This is the "good insight" spoken of in Psalm 111:10.
The Believer begins to recognize God's guidance more clearly, discern spiritual truth more accurately, and navigate life's challenges with Wisdom that comes from above.
A Beautiful Spiritual Progression
When we place these Scriptures together, we see a Powerful progression:
- The Message of the Cross reveals the Wisdom of God.
- The Cross humbles us and brings us into reverent fear of the Lord.
- The fear of the Lord becomes the beginning of Wisdom.
- Salvation creates a desire to know and follow God's instructions.
- Obedience to His Word produces spiritual insight and discernment.
- The Holy Spirit continues to renew our minds and conform us to the image of Christ.
What begins at the Cross continues throughout the Believer's entire walk with God.
The Message of the Cross is not merely the doorway into salvation; it remains the foundation for spiritual growth, Wisdom, and understanding. Every truth in God's Word finds its meaning and fulfillment in Jesus Christ and His Finished Work on the Cross.
May we never move beyond the Message of the Cross, for it is the Power of God, the Wisdom of God, and the beginning of a life filled with true spiritual insight.
